Internships and Externships

Retama Equine Hospital is a 100% equine veterinary facility providing services in medicine, surgery and reproduction. Our goal is to improve the health and welfare of the horse and to provide the highest quality of veterinary medicine and exceptional service to our clients.

Internship Opportunity


Staffing Number and Tasks: 20 employees, including office manager, veterinary technicians, receptionist/clerical staff, barn crew

Type of Practice: 100% Equine veterinary facility providing services in medicine, surgery and reproduction

Facilities: 15 stall barn, 16 outside paddocks, 6 stall barn, 4 isolation stalls, 3 ICU stalls, 2 treatment rooms, radiology room, surgery room, 2 padded recovery stalls

Names of Veterinarians in Practice including any Specialty Qualifications:
Michael F. Martin, DVM, Keith Huffman, DVM, Sarah Grose, DVM (certified in Animal Chiropractic), and Emily Thometz, DVM

Case Load:
Approximately 3000 cases per year

Types of Cases (%):
25% medical
25% surgical
25% lameness
15% neonatal
10% reproduction

Estimated Daily or Weekly Load: Varies with time of year and emergency caseload. Normal business hours are 8am-5pm, Monday through Friday, and 8am-12pm on Saturday. Emergency services are provided at all other times.

Philosophy of Internship: To provide a new veterinarian the opportunity to practice quality equine medicine and surgery in a learning environment that is conducive to increasing their knowledge and skills in veterinary medicine along with the day to day factors of managing a private practice, thus allowing them to become a successful equine veterinarian.

Prerequisites of Application and Internship: DVM degree, completion of National Board Exam (NAVLE), licensed in the state of Texas, at least three references, personal interview

Notification of Acceptance: Accepted applicants will be notified as soon as the application process is complete

Employee Benefits: 7 days vacation, Professional Liability Insurance and AAEP dues

Employment Contracts: Simple one year employee contract agreement

List of Internship Duties in Practice: Duties will involve performing or assisting in:
Treatment of hospitalized cases
Examination of patients admitted
Veterinary procedures (surgery, anesthesia, diagnostics)
Emergency duty
Some ambulatory calls

Emergency Duty Requirements: Rotating schedule with other veterinarians; on call 24 hours/day when scheduled

Amount of Supervision: Supervision depends on the intern's progress in development of their knowledge and skill

Internship Salary: $2500 per month in addition to above benefits

Term of Employment: 1 year

Goals of the Externship: Expose veterinary students to fast-­paced primary, referral, and emergency care equine practice. Provide mentorship for students interested in an equine-­focused career.

Externship Responsibilities: Good attitude, Observe/assist in appointments, emergencies, and inpatient procedure

Other Information: Located in Texas Hill Country on north side of San Antonio in close proximity to Retama Park. Caseload includes racing, pleasure, Western & Eastern performance horses. We are a full-­service equine hospital offering 24-­hour care.
